The Upper Peninsula had one of its deadliest COVID-19 weeks in months, with Menominee County accounting for three of 13 fatalities blamed on the virus since Jan. 17.
The region also had two virus-related deaths each in Baraga and Marquette counties; and one each in Delta, Keweenaw, Dickinson, Iron, Ontonagon and Luce counties, according to figures posted on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday.
The MDHHS website Tuesday added 157 confirmed COVID-19 positives since Jan. 17, up 24 from the previous week, to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 35 in Chippewa County; 32 in Marquette County; 22 in Menominee County; 14 in Schoolcraft County; 12 in Delta County; 10 in Houghton County; seven in Dickinson County; five in Alger County; four in Baraga and Iron counties; three in Ontonagon and Mackinac counties; and two each in Keweenaw, Gogebic and Luce counties.
Based on the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 63,059 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 973 confirmed deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 582 confirmed cases and 67 probable, and 15 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 778 confirmed cases and 882 probable, 17 confirmed deaths and four probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,181 confirmed, 141 probable and 42 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,278 confirmed, 823 probable and eight deaths, 10 probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,383 confirmed cases and 820 probable, 14 deaths and four probable; Mackinac County, 1,936 confirmed cases and 1,028 probable, 33 deaths and five probable; Baraga County, 2,123 confirmed cases, 449 probable and 58 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 3,112 confirmed cases and 416 probable, 84 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,560 confirmed cases and 695 probable, 44 deaths and 34 probable; Chippewa County, 4,148 confirmed cases and 5,991 probable, and 98 deaths, 21 probable; Menominee County, 4,862 confirmed cases, 2,182 probable and 68 deaths, 13 probable; Dickinson County, 6,192 confirmed cases and 3,095 probable, 103 deaths and 25 probable; Houghton County, 8,184 confirmed cases, 1,233 probable, 94 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 9,072 confirmed cases and 3,248 probable, 149 deaths and 37 probable; and Marquette County, 14,668 confirmed cases, 4,247 probable and 146 deaths, 19 probable.
The MDHHS on Tuesday added 6,530 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Jan. 17, down 451 for the week, or an average of about 933 cases per day for the seven-day period, for a total of 3,024,478 cases since COVID tracking began. The state since Jan. 17 recorded 260 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus, up 76, to reach 41,445.
