Erdogan might approve Finland’s NATO bid, ‘shock’ Sweden
ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkey’s president has suggested his country might approve Finland’s application for NATO membership before taking any action on Sweden’s. The two Nordic nations applied jointly to become members of the military alliance following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In a prerecorded video released Sunday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan indicated Turkey might sign off on only Finland. Turkey has accused Sweden of being too lenient toward groups it deems as terror organizations or existential threats. The Turkish government late Saturday issued a travel warning for European countries due to anti-Turkish demonstrations and what it described as Islamophobia. The warning came after pro-Kurdish groups held protests and an anti-Islam activist burned the Quran in Stockholm.
Trustees picked by DeSantis may change progressive college
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — “Your education. Your way. Be original. Be you.” That’s how New College of Florida describes its approach to higher education in an admission brochure. The state school of fewer than 1,000 students nestled along Sarasota Bay has long been known for its progressive thought and creative course offerings that don’t use traditional grades. To some, New College’s reputation as a haven for originality and individualized coursework is now threatened. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ recently appointed six new trustees who intend to turn the school into a classical liberal arts school modeled after conservative favorite Hillsdale College in Michigan.
Elon Musk’s mysterious ways on display in Tesla tweet trial
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Elon Musk’s enigmatic personality and unconventional tactics are emerging as key exhibits in a trial revolving around one of his most polarizing pursuits — tweeting. The trial, centered on a pair of tweets announcing Musk had obtained the money to take Tesla private in 2018, reeled the 51-year-old billionaire into a courtroom for three days of testimony that opened a peephole into his often inscrutable mind. Evidence submitted so far in a trial scheduled to end this week has shown Musk had made a proposal to lead a buyout, but that he hadn’t locked up the money to pay for it as he tweeted in 2018.
Concerns over prayer breakfast lead Congress to take it over
WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Prayer Breakfast is one of the most visible and long-standing events that brings religion and politics together in Washington. But due to concerns the gathering had become too divisive, it’s now splitting from the private religious group that had overseen it for decades. The organizer and host for this year’s breakfast, which is scheduled for Thursday, will be a new foundation headed by former Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas. Sen. Chris Coons, a regular participant and chairman of the Senate ethics committee, says the move was prompted in part by concerns in recent years that members of Congress didn’t know important details about the larger multiday gathering that included the breakfast.
Russians gone from Ukraine village, fear and hardship remain
KALYNIVSKE, Ukraine (AP) — It has been over 11 weeks since Ukrainian forces wrested back part of Kherson province from Russian occupation. But liberation hasn’t diminished the hardship for residents, both those returning home and the ones who never left. In the peak of winter, the rural village not far from an active front line has no power or water. The sounds of war are never far. Still, residents have slowly trickled back to Kalynivske, preferring to live without basic services, dependent on humanitarian aid and under the constant threat of bombardment than as displaced people elsewhere in their country. They say staying is an act of defiance against the relentless Russian attacks intended to make the area unlivable.
Baby girl found abandoned in Florida an hour after birth
MULBERRY, Fla. (AP) — A Florida baby is safe after being found abandoned outdoors about an hour after being born. The Polk County sheriff’s office said the girl was wrapped in a blanket and still attached to a placenta when found on a hill outside a trailer park early Saturday morning. The temperature was in the low 50s. The baby was taken to a hospital and was healthy. Authorities used dogs and a drone to try to find the mother, but were unsuccessful. Florida has a safe haven law that allows parents to leave newborns at a fire station or medical facility up to a week after birth.
Protesters: ‘Cop City’ activist’s killing doesn’t make sense
ATLANTA (AP) — Self-proclaimed “forest defenders” in Atlanta are calling for a more thorough investigation into the death of a protester who was killed by authorities after officials said the activist shot a trooper. The activist’s death has been met with vigils around the world. Friends say they knew 26-year-old Tortuguita, or “Little Turtle,” as funny, curious and thoughtful, not the kind of person who would fire a gun on police. But authorities say that’s just what Tortuguita did as they tried to clear an 85-acre forested area that’s set to be developed as a police and firefighter training facility. Protesters have dubbed the site “Cop City” and have been camping there for more than a year.

The team put him on an emotional roller coaster in a thrill-a-minute FA Cup match against Sheffield United that had an ending not quite in the script. The team is in the fifth tier of English soccer. Reynolds and one of his daughters flew in for the fourth-round match.

Biden, McCarthy to discuss debt limit in talks on Wednesday
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says he’s looking forward to discussing with President Joe Biden a “reasonable and responsible way that we can lift the debt ceiling” when the two meet Wednesday at the White House. It’ll be their first sit-down since McCarthy became speaker. McCarthy tells CBS’ “Face the Nation” that he wants to address spending cuts along with raising the debt limit. But the White House has ruled out pairing those two together as the government tries to avoid a potentially devastating financial default. The speaker is pledging that cuts to Social Security and Medicare will be off the table.
