After six weeks of increasing numbers, reports of new COVID-19 cases have dropped two weeks in a row in Nash County and coronavirus hospitalizations have also decreased. Edgecombe County’s new case numbers also dipped since the beginning of the year.
Nationally, a federal panel made recommendations this week that vaccine policies need to be simplified.
For the week ending Monday, Jan. 23, the state Department of Health and Human Services reported that 89 new cases were recorded in Nash County. That’s 38 fewer cases than the previous week and 158 cases fewer than two weeks ago.
Between Nov. 28 and Jan. 10, new cases of COVID-19 rose steadily from 39 to 248 cases before declining the following week.
UNC Nash Health in Rocky Mount reported it cared for an average of 11 patients for the week ending Jan. 23, five fewer than the previous two weeks.
For the week ending Jan. 21, Edgecombe County Health reported that 52 new cases of COVID-19 infections were detected there. On Dec. 31, that figure was 125.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has rated the Twin Counties as having “medium” community levels of COVID-19. Community levels, which were recently “high” in both counties, are based on new case reports, hospitalizations, vaccination participation and coronavirus particles found in wastewater.
A 21-member committee recommended to the FDA that an annual fall vaccination plan, similar to the one used with the flu, be used to ensure that Americans are vaccinated for the latest strains and variants.
The committee recommended that future COVID-19 vaccines should be interchangeable. Regardless of it being a first dose or a booster, the vaccine would target the same viral strains.
The committee also heard recommendations that a single annual-shot campaign be held in the fall similar to the way flu vaccines are promoted. The vaccine would be formulated to address the predicted variant.
Simplifying the program would eliminate the guesswork involved in keeping track of vaccinations and vaccination dates, according to reports from the agency.
