Chelsea Vs. Liverpool: Expected Score
Liverpool’s 4-1 triumph against Chelsea ended a peculiar and protracted run of draws between the two teams. If you take away the Reds’ triumphs via penalty shootouts, the preceding seven games were all draws, with four ending in a scoreless draw.
Pochettino’s team may try to frustrate a Klopp team that has been severely weakened by injuries lately, and they may have some success, particularly if they are able to take the lead.
But because of their unpredictable nature and Liverpool’s stellar season (they have only lost four games in all competitions), the current Premier League leaders are favorites to win the first trophy of the English premier league.
Preview
As the season’s final months draw near, Liverpool is still in the running for four major trophies, much as they were in 2021–2022. The Reds won the EFL and FA Cups that time around after defeating Chelsea in two thrilling penalty shootouts, and Jürgen Klopp will be hoping for a repeat performance when his team visits Wembley Stadium on Sunday. But with Liverpool’s increasing selection issues, Mauricio Pochettino’s team may like their chances of putting an end to the Reds’ hopes of winning a quadruple.
Liverpool’s week has gone well on the field, as they have defeated Brentford and Luton Town 4-1 to maintain their lead over Manchester City and Arsenal in the Premier League title battle. However, those triumphs did not come without a price. Due to injuries sustained at the Gtech Community Stadium, Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones will miss Sunday’s match. Darwin Núñez and Mohamed Salah will be evaluated following their absence from Wednesday’s victory over the Hatters.
In the midfield, Dominik Szoboszlai is also questionable, and Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson will undoubtedly be out. However, as they have done throughout Liverpool’s League Cup campaign thus far, those absences ought to provide others the chance to shine.
Any Liverpool attacker should pose a threat to Chelsea; Gakpo (11) is one of five Reds, along with Salah (19), Jota (14), Núñez (13) and Luis Díaz (10), who have scored ten goals in all competitions this year. There are five players in double figures on no other squad in the top five leagues in Europe.
Given that cup goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher is expected to start the game, Liverpool’s perceived weakness could be in goalkeeping. This season, Kelleher has started 15 games compared to Alisson’s 24 in all competitions, with a save percentage of just 66.7% to the Brazilian’s 75.3%.
However, during his Liverpool career, Kelleher has often filled in magnificently, and two years ago, when Liverpool and Chelsea faced off in the competition final, the Irishman was one of the heroes. The Reds won 11–10 on penalty kicks following a goalless draw. He scored his penalty in a tense shootout before watching his opposite number Kepa Arrizabalaga rocket over the crossbar.
That was the most recent, and sixth, EFL Cup final to end on penalties. In the four matches that Liverpool has participated in, they have won three and drawn one.
